What is an auction announcement?

An auction announcement is the official notice published before a Treasury Bill auction.

It tells investors:

What is being offered
When the auction will take place
How long the investment period is
When bids must be submitted
Think of it as the instruction sheet for that specific auction.

Key sections to look for

Auction date

The day the Treasury Bill auction takes place — when submitted bids are evaluated.

Offered amount

The total the issuer plans to raise in that auction for each tenor — a sense of the auction's size.

e.g., ETB 5B offered for the 28-day bill
Settlement date

The date successful investors must complete payment and receive allocation confirmation.

Auction method

The pricing or bidding mechanism used for that auction — this determines how bids are evaluated.

What this means for investors

Before submitting a bid, ask:

Which tenor is being offered?
When is the deadline?
How much is being offered?
What are the settlement requirements?
Does this auction fit my investment timeline?

Common mistakes to avoid

Ignoring deadlines

Late bids are generally not accepted.

Choosing the wrong tenor

Make sure the maturity period matches your cash needs.

Not understanding bid mechanics

Different auction structures may affect allocation outcomes.

Where to find the announcement

Official auction announcements are published on the National Bank of Ethiopia's website at nbe.gov.et/treasury-bills. Your licensed intermediary will also communicate these notices directly to help you stay informed.
